Introduction
Marriage is an sacred institution. It legalizes the relation between a Man and a Woman by giving a social sanction to it.It make life complete by removing loneliness and by making four walls into home.
Hindu marriage is considered very auspicious. It is conducted with many rituals. The customs are such that every member of the family has some role in it. Be it parents, Brothers, Sisters, Maternal Uncles, Aunts, Sister-in-law, Brother-in-law or cousins.
This blog will give you the complete information regrading the rituals from first day of marriage till it finishes.
I will try to explain all the rituals that are important and performed while marriage ceremony.

I will try to explain all the rituals that are important and performed while marriage ceremony.
Step I ( Kundali Milan / Horoscope Matching )
Kundali Milan / Horoscope Matching
This is the first vital step. In match making process elders decide, to be man and women into wed LOCK. Only when their HOROSCOPE matches , various aspects like Bhakut and Manglik etc. are taken into consideration. Match is considered perfect when 36 qualities matches. Minimum 18 quality should match. Its also good if 25, 26 or 32 qualities matches with each other.

Step II ( Roakaa )
Roakaa
After horoscope matching this is the first step towards marriage. Roakaa sometimes pronounced as rokna means to hold bride for groom ( something like that !!). It a starting of new relationship between two families. In this pupils from the groom/ boy side give sweets, fruits, saree or any gold item as a token to bride. Similarly folks from girls/ Bride side give Gold, Money , Sweets, fruits, clothes as a "Shagun" to boy and his close relatives like father, Mother, Brother, sister.
Usually this function is for very close relatives like parents and brother sisters or its up to you. And can be done mutually by both families or as per decided.

Step III ( Ring Ceremony / Lap Filling )
Ring Ceremony / Lap Filling or Godh Bharai in Hindi.
This function is usually hosted by bride/ girl side.
Important items for Godh Bharai (Lap filling) from groom/ Boy side for would be bride.
1. Ring
2. Make Up items including Bangles, Bindi, Ribon etc.
3. Clothes - Saree / Suit/ Dresses.
Couple of items are also required for putting into lap(Godh) of bride.
Like 5-7 variety of fruits, dry fruits, Cocnut , 5 or 7 toys, Cash.
The girl and boy exchange gold or diamond rings.
From Boy Side ladies do the make up of girl and all the items give into the lap(Godh) of girl.
From Girl Side relatives do tilak of boy and give "shagun" to boy. And girls parents give sweets, Cash and fruits to the boy relatives.

Sagai
This function is basically hosted from grooms/ Boys side. These are some of the items that family of girl side take to this function :-
1. Basket of fruits or Goodies.

5. Father in law's suit + gold item.
6. Groom's Suit .

Mehndi
Mehndi
Mehndi: Henna / Mehndi is send by groom a day before marriage. Some goodies are sent along with it like silver anklet, dry fruits, Mustard Oil. One square white cloth is taken which is colored with drops of turmeric. Close realtive of grooms side take this to the bride house. In return that person is given Some cash as "Shagun".
This mehndi is to be mixed with the mehndi which is going to be applied on bride hand.
When henna is applied on bride's hand than all the relatives and friends present dance, sing folk songs/ Marriage Songs. At some places this is the function for women only.

Marriage Day
Finally...
Ganesh Pooja : - This is an auspicious day. It begins with making satiya on the east direction wall. After this: -
1. 1-1/4 Kg wheat.
2. 1-1/4 Kg salt.
3. 1-1/4 Kg rice.
4. 1-1/4 Kg green Moong sabut.
5. 1-1/4 Kg Mathri.
6. 1-1/4 Kg Barley.
Along with one saree is taken and the bride or groom bow's down to take the almighty's blessings. All the preparation is done by daughter or sister (Bua ) of family.
The girl is made to be wear special Bangles called "Choorah". In punjabi's which is brought by maternal uncle's ( Mama ). It is washed with unboiled or "Kaccha Milk" and worshiped. Before putting them to bride's hands.
Madaa Bandhnaa : - Sand is poured in a big container having a big bamboo stick tied to it with red thread called Kalawa.
Seven plates of Mud. A hale is drilled in center filled with Athri and cash into it all the plates are tied in cord and are put in the corridor of the house. This is done by sister's husband (Bhenoi) or paternal uncle (phupha ). Mother of bride / groom gives some money as a "shagun" to the person who has done this.
Haldi ( Telban ) : - A paste of turmeric and oil to be applied on the body and face of bride and groom.
Ingredients required for this ceremony are :-
1. 7 Bowls of mud.
2. Henna
3. Roli
4. Mustard oil
5. Curd
6. Dhoop
7. Milk
8. Turmeric
All the ingredients are kept in each bowl. After this the Bride / Groom is made to sit on a wooden piece ( Patra )/ Chair which has Kalawa tied to it. This ceremony is done by seven Married Women. The ingredients from the bowl are touched with the help of grass on the toes, feet, knees, shoulder, forehead of the Bride / Groom. This ritual is called TailBaan or Haldi Chaddana.
This is done five/ seven times as been told by pandit/ astrologer.
Same seven ladies will again do the process after slight shifting the patra. First they fill take grass dip it into all the bowls and touch to the head - shoulders - knees -feet and toes. . This is called Haldi utarna. The ladies who perform TailBaan are given four ladoos or Battasha. Their should be a young girl/ boy also who sit along with bride/ Groom called Sabali/ Sarbala.
Chak Poojan : - After tailban bhabhi goes with dever ( Big Brother's wife and younger Brother ) to the potter having decorated see ( ghaddaa ) on her head and rest of the ladies also follow them having small decorated see ( ghaddaa ) on their head. Then make satiya on the potter's instrument and go to the temple and bring water from the well or the hand pump in the temple. That temple water is mixed with the bathing water of bride / groom. After taking bath Bride / groom will come and sit on the wooden block which was used for tailbaan.The aarti will be done there only.

After the bride or groom had taken bath on the marriage day he/she is made to sit on the wooden platform on which tailbaan was performed earlier. He/she need to sit on it where performing the aarti. Five lamps are placed in the four direction and one is kept in the center in thali. Mustard Oil is poured in lamps. Four ladoos are kept in the plate. After aarti Bride / Groom are given "Laddo as prasad " from it. This plate is kept in the temple of house. Same plate will be used at the time of ghurchadi and also while welcoming the bride at her arrival.
After aarti groom and bride get ready for the grand wedding.

Groom's Horse Riding ceremony at the time of Marriage

1. 1-1/4 gram Pulse( channadal ) for the horse.
2. 250 gms rice, sweets, roli
As soon as the groom dressed up for the Barat the sister-in-law puts 'Kajal' in his eyes. Brother-in-law makes him wear the saffa or the turban. All the persons Present do the tikka i.e Putting the roli on the forehead and put garland of currency notes and put some sweets into his mouth. After that Brother-in-law helps the groom to sit on the horse. Sister scatter's the rice on the path, behind the horse till it reaches the temple. Groom goes to the temple for ashirwad/ Blessings from God.

2. Plate for Aarti.
3. Diya (Lamps).
4. Roli.
5. Rice.
6. Ladoos or any other sweets.
The groom is helped by Brother-in-law to get down from the horse. He is welcomed from the brides mother or sister-in-law -By offering Aarti. some money is kept as 'shagun' in her plate. In some cases the groom is made to cut the ribbon at the entarance. After welcoming the guests the folks from girs side carry out the rituals of field worship (khet Poojan). One drum along with five utensils, groom's clothes along with cash is given by brother of bride to groom after doing his tikka.
After this Jaimala Ceremony is done . In this normally special stage is errected. Bride's Brother's all (cousins) hold a special sheet of flowers from four ends. The bride is made to walk under it along with her Brothers towards the stage. Firstly the Bride puts the " Garland of Flowers " in the grooms neck. The same procedure is repeated by the groom for the Bride. than both of them are made to sit on this stage.
Time is calculated by astrological calculations for fera / saptpadi i.e marriage. All the ingredients for hawan is brought by Pandit Ji. The bride and groom are made to go seven times around fire i.e Agni taking diffrent wows each time.

Vidai and Groom house welcome of Bride/Bahu
Vidai :- At the time of departure of date bride throws back from her filled palms - Rice, Batasha and coins. girl is considered as an incarnation of god ' laxmi '. This ritual symbolizes that house should be fulfilled with plenty of happiness.
Grooms house Welcome of Bahu :- The newly wedded Bride is brought to the grooms house . Water is sprinkled at both corners of the entrance door. Both Bride and groom are given aarti together at the entrance. Sister of groom stops the groom and bride at the entrance and asks for ' Shagun ' which is readily given by the brother. After which they enter the house and pay homage / worship the deity in which the family has faith.
Sweetened rice made and all the close kith and kin that is sister-in-law, mother-in-law, sisters daughter in law serve this sweet rice to each other by silver coin so that new Bride mix up with in laws.
Kangna Khelna :- A large shallow utensil full of water is taken and milk , baby grass, Kalawa, Gold ring of groom is put in it and newly wedded Bride and groom asked to search for the ring in it. who so ever finds it first gets it. This game is played 5 times.
Neem stick is taken and the bride and his brother in law play with it. They beat each other with this stick. while the remaining crowd dance sing and rejoice. after this - Muh Dikhai of bride is performed. It is a ritual in which the bride is given Shagun - cash - jewellery etc. by relatives and friends. By that time bride touches the feet of elder close relatives and seeks blessing with the return shagun called per chuai (feet touching ).
